In 2001, Kol Ami became the first predominantly LGBTQ+ synagogue in the United States to construct its own building. The building has a number of symbolically meaningful features. Each of the seven windows on the west wall of the Sanctuary signifies a stage of creation: yellow for light; blue for the heavens; white inlaid with leaves to signify the earth and sea; purple for the sun, moon and space; green symbolizes the birds and beasts; orange for humanity and stark white to honor Shabbat, the seventh day on which God rested.
The cutouts adjacent to each window on the outside of the building spell “peace” and “justice” in Hebrew text. Hebrew text as well as art is further integrated throughout the building. The Hebrew text circling the Sanctuary near the ceiling are based on the 10 aspects of God in the Jewish mystical tradition. They include: love, holiness, commandment, joy, compassion, justice, eternity, blessing, understanding and faith.
In addition to the Sanctuary, Kol Ami’s rented facilities include a courtyard, reception lobby, meeting room, library, charming roof deck, and commercial kitchen. Our Sanctuary, the focal point of the building, is a softly illuminated lofty space with a two-story high ceiling and simple, modern lines. Skylights and a large eastern window provide natural light during the day. At night, twelve hanging lanterns float above, providing a warm glow.
Our third-story roof deck is the perfect space for a cocktail reception or an intimate gathering under the Southern California sky. Our Sanctuary, reception lobby, meeting room, and library have held classes, speakers’ series, conferences, trainings, art openings, brunches, and Torah studies. Our commercial kitchen can accommodate professional caterers.
